Yes, we're talking about vanilla! While Vanilla pompona might impress with its bold, chunky appearance, Vanilla planifolia - our main variety - remains the true queen of the vanilla world. Still, curiosity drives us forward.
That’s why in our Madagascar plantation, we’ve planted a few Vanilla pompona vines simply to better understand the real differences between the two species.
🟢 Vanilla planifolia (Bourbon vanilla)
✔️ The classic – makes up ~95% of the global vanilla market
✔️ Rich, intense aroma with high vanillin content
✔️ Long, slender pods – powerful in flavor
✔️ Perfect for pastry, ice cream, extracts, and premium food products
✔️ Maturity: around 9 months from pollination
🟡 Vanilla pompona (also known as “banana vanilla”)
✔️ Much thicker, shorter, and heavier pods
✔️ Aroma is softer - floral, sometimes with chocolate or musky notes
✔️ Lower vanillin levels but a unique aromatic profile
✔️ Rare variety - often used in perfumery or gourmet applications
✔️ Slower growing, but visually stunning
We planted Vanilla pompona out of pure curiosity - to learn firsthand how it compares to the planifolia we know so well. Because real understanding starts in the field.
Have you ever tried Vanilla pompona? Share your thoughts - I'd love to hear them!
